The Leicester B. Holland Prize is an annual competition that recognizes the best single-sheet measured drawing of a historic building, structure or site prepared to the standards of the National Park Service’s Heritage Documentation Programs (HDP). The sheet may be prepared for the Historic American Buildings Survey (HABS), Historic American Engineering Record (HAER), or Historic American Landscapes Survey (HALS). The prize is supported by the Paul Rudolph Trust, the American Institute of Architects, and the Library of Congress’s Center for Architecture, Design, and Engineering. The prize honors Leicester B. Holland (1882-1952), FAIA, chairman of the AIA’s Committee on Historic Buildings, head of the Fine Arts Division of the Library of Congress, first curator of the HABS collection, co-founder of the HABS program in the 1930s, and the first chair of the HABS Advisory Board. 

By requiring only a single sheet, the competition challenges the delineator to capture the essence of the site through the presentation of key features that reflect its historic and its architectural, landscape architectural or engineering significance. The Holland Prize competition is open to all those interested, regardless of experience or professional background. 

The winner will receive a $1,500 cash prize and a certificate of recognition. Preservation Architect, the online newsletter of the American Institute of Architects’ Historic Resources Committee, will publish the winning drawing. Merit awards may also be given.

London Festival of Architecture and the London Borough of Merton have launched ‘Morden Moments,’ a new design competition inviting architects, designers, and artists to create imaginative interventions that refresh and enliven public spaces in Morden town centre.

This competition presents an exciting opportunity for both emerging and established design talent to propose site-specific ideas that enhance public life, respond to Morden’s distinctive character, and celebrate the area’s community identity. Inspired by the LFA2025 theme of ‘Voices,’ the initiative aims to amplify local stories and foster deeper connections through thoughtful and inclusive design. 

Transforming Public Space Through Design

Entrants are encouraged to develop proposals that activate and enrich public spaces, creating moments of pause, interaction, and reflection for residents and visitors. Submissions should align with Merton’s wider ambitions for a more welcoming, dynamic, and sustainable town centre, incorporating durable materials and ensuring long-term usability.

One or two winning teams will be selected in June 2025, with their designs installed ahead of LFA2026 to coincide with the centenary of Morden Station. The interventions will remain in place for approximately five years, contributing to the town’s evolving public realm ahead of planned long-term improvements. 

A Platform for Creativity and Community

‘Morden Moments’ builds on LFA’s commitment to fostering design excellence and encouraging public engagement with architecture. A key aim of the initiative is to cultivate meaningful collaborations between designers, residents, businesses, and local stakeholders. By transforming underused spaces, the competition seeks to create welcoming and vibrant environments that reflect the voices and needs of Morden’s diverse community. 

How to Enter

The competition is open to architects, designers, and creatives from across the industry. The deadline for submissions is 12:00 on Thursday 8 May 2025.
