Call for Papers: 2025 Buell Dissertation Colloquium

Registration Deadline: Dec 16, 2024; Submission Deadline: Dec 16, 2024

The Temple Hoyne Buell Center for the Study of American Architecture invites submissions for its biennial Dissertation Colloquium, to be held March 28-29, 2025. Doctoral students from diverse institutional and disciplinary backgrounds, working on dissertation topics related to architecture and the built environment in the Americas, are invited to apply. The plural, Americas, is meant to expand the Center’s mission in two ways: first, to include comparative thought about building practices across the hemisphere and the world; and second, to suggest that there are several Americas within the United States. Students whose dissertations focus on other geographies will be equally considered if comparative perspectives with hemispheric contexts are made explicit. Cross-disciplinary approaches are especially encouraged.

Up to eight doctoral students from universities worldwide will be selected to present a 20-minute talk drawn from their doctoral research. The presentation should be based on a self-contained chapter or portion of the student’s dissertation research and should not be an overview or synthesis of the dissertation as a whole.

Requirements
Students must be enrolled in an accredited doctoral program and have completed their coursework plus at least one year of dissertation research. Submissions must include a complete draft of the intended presentation, together with illustrations. Submissions must also be accompanied by the following: a cover sheet specifying the student’s institutional affiliation, postal and e-mail addresses, and phone number; a 150-word abstract describing the paper’s relationship to the overall dissertation topic; and a brief statement from the student’s principal adviser certifying the applicant’s status (stage of completion) in the doctoral program.

Submission
Please send electronic submissions (no larger than 3MB) in PDF format to [email protected], by Monday, December 16, 2024. Papers selected for presentation will be announced by the end of January, 2025.

The Temple Hoyne Buell Center for the Study of American Architecture is part of Columbia University’s Graduate School of Architecture, Planning, and Preservation. For a quarter of a century, the Buell Dissertation Colloquium has been a vibrant forum for new work by emerging scholars. New Practices New York 2025: Voice

Registration Deadline: Jan 10, 2025; Submission Deadline: Jan 10, 2025

New Practices New York, a biennial competition since 2006, serves as a preeminent platform to recognize and promote new and innovative architecture and design firms in New York CityOrganized by the AIANY New Practices Committee, this juried portfolio competition honors designers that apply unique and innovative strategies, both in the projects they undertake and the practices they have established.

2025 Theme: Voice

After a pause since the last award cycle in 2020, we are excited to relaunch the ninth edition of the New Practices New York Award for 2025. In the intervening years, the world has experienced major upheaval, and the field of architecture has been met with both challenges and opportunities in light of those changes, opening new questions about how we work, respond, evolve and adapt.

In this new context, we seek New York City-based architecture and design practices who offer a distinctive voice in engaging the critical issues that are relevant now. In particular, we call for portfolios with innovative design work and thinking that draws upon the idea of voice, both as an expression of unique identity and as an instrument for communicating purpose and intent. We seek practices that use the agency of their voice to expand the role of the practitioner in crafting new approaches and models for working in architecture, to promote a spirit of experimentation in the design process, and to provoke creative and adaptive bodies of work.

As a new practice, how do you “find your voice” and establish a fresh point of view that can be distinguished amid a saturation of images, information, data, and the emergence of AI? When and how do you “raise your voice” and assert your practice in engaging critical issues or as an agent for positive change for communities and the built environment? What do you have to say and how do you express the tone, tenor, and message of your voice?

Through this call for entries, we are looking to discover and highlight a diverse array of voices in architecture that stand out both for their contributions as a singular practice and together as a cohort of voices in complementary and collective dialogue with one another.

La Juanita

Registration Deadline: Mar 14, 2025; Submission Deadline: Mar 14, 2025

TerraViva launches LA JUANITA, a new architecture competition in which participants will work on the design of a contemporary house facing the amazing natural landscape of Paraná’s river (Argentina).

Prizes up to 8.000 € will be awarded to the winners selected by an international jury panel composed, among others, by Giancarlo Mazzanti (El Equipo Mazzanti), Virginia Theilig (FAPyD), Diego Arraigada (Diego Arraigada Arquitectos) and Luciana Lembo (Adamo-Faiden).

BRIEF

The idea of ‘La Juanita’ as a permanent housing location invites architects and designers to imagine what an Argentine home would look like today, nestled in a riverside landscape that slows the frenetic pace of city life and fosters a deep connection with the natural context.

The villa should be designed for a family of four, with the possibility of receiving and eventually accommodating a couple of guests who will enjoy all the comforts and privacy.

PRIZES & MENTIONS

  • 1st Prize: 4.000€
  • 2nd Prize: 2.000€
  • 3rd Prize: 1.000€
  • 2 Golden Mentions: 500€ each
  • 10 Honorable Mentions: coupon for a free competition
  • 30 Finalists: published on TerraViva channels

GUIDELINES

The design can be single-story or spread over two levels (ground floor + first floor). Both compact and more dispersed layouts will be equally considered. The layout, size and arrangement of the home’s intimate and social spaces, as well as their relationships and spatial hierarchies, will be at the discretion of the designers.

Designers are invited to incorporate double-height spaces, semi-covered areas, pergolas, galleries, terraces and exterior flooring treatments, ensuring a gradual transition from the interior to the surrounding nature. These intermediate zones will be crucial for the everyday use of the house, providing enjoyment throughout the year. Do not forget to enhance and value the incredible views with your design proposal.  It will be essential to consider the characteristics of sun exposure, visuals and topography of the site.

REQUESTED MATERIAL

Two A1 panels (59,4 x 84,1 cm) landscape oriented + a brief text describing the proposal (250-500 words);
