Premise:
The traditional library, once a revered custodian of physical knowledge, stands at a pivotal juncture in the 21st century. As the digital realm expands exponentially, offering boundless information at our fingertips, the physical library risks obsolescence if it fails to adapt dynamically. This competition challenges architects to envision "The Nexus Library: A Physical Portal to the Digital Universe," a revolutionary institution that not only houses physical texts but actively embraces and translates the vast, intangible ocean of digital data into meaningful, sensory experiences. This premise calls for a deep philosophical understanding of how space and form can mediate between the tangible and the virtual, creating a new architectural typology for knowledge acquisition and collaborative exploration in the digital age.

Objective:
Participants are tasked with reimagining the modern library as a dynamic sensory and spatial interface for digital information. The core objective is to seamlessly blend the enduring tranquility of traditional reading halls with cutting-edge, immersive data chambers. Designs must meticulously utilize light, material, and advanced technology to choreograph the flow of knowledge, guiding users through both contemplative individual study and vibrant collective digital exploration. The aim is to create an environment where information is not just accessed, but felt, understood, and engaged with on multiple sensory levels, fostering a deeper, more intuitive connection to both historical wisdom and future innovation within a singularly integrated architectural expression.

Site:
The proposed design should be conceived for a prominent urban location, envisioning a site that embodies high public visibility and accessibility within a bustling metropolitan context. While participants are encouraged to consider a specific real-world site for inspiration, the competition allows for the selection of a hypothetical, centrally located plot. We suggest a generous site area ranging from approximately 8,000 to 15,000 square meters, providing ample scope for an impactful, multi-story architectural statement that commands civic presence. The design must demonstrate a sensitive yet transformative response to its immediate urban fabric, integrating seamlessly with existing infrastructure while establishing itself as a beacon of intellectual and technological advancement.

Constraints:
The design must intricately weave together spaces for traditional literary engagement with innovative zones for digital interaction. This includes, but is limited to, serene reading rooms, dedicated archive storage, flexible study areas, alongside immersive virtual reality pods, interactive data visualization halls, collaborative digital learning labs, and adaptable exhibition spaces for emerging technologies. Special attention must be paid to the choreographed use of natural and artificial light to delineate zones and enhance sensory experiences. Material choices should reflect both durability and a forward-thinking aesthetic, contributing to the overall spatial narrative. Technology must be embedded as an intrinsic design element, not merely an afterthought, ensuring seamless user interfaces and robust infrastructure that anticipates future technological evolution. Designs must also adhere to principles of universal accessibility and environmental sustainability.

Dates and Fees:
The official submission deadline for all design proposals is set for May 25, 2026. All participants are required to complete their registration and submit their projects by this date. A non-refundable registration fee of 29 is mandatory for entry into the competition, ensuring commitment to the design challenge. Further details regarding submission guidelines, digital format requirements, and precise judging criteria will be made available upon registration. Participants are encouraged to register early to receive updates and clarifications throughout the competition period, facilitating a comprehensive and thoughtful design process.
