Registration Deadline: Apr 11, 2025; Submission Deadline: Jun 3, 2025
Purpose of the Design Competition

The current Yeosu City Hall was newly built in 1980. After the 1998 administrative consolidation of Yeosu City, Yeocheon City, and Yeocheon County, it was operated using three separate buildings. Due to events such as the 2012 Yeosu Expo, the establishment of an international education institute, increased administrative demands, and organizational expansion, the city has continued relocating offices and leasing buildings. As a result, there are now eight separate administrative office buildings in operation.

The excessive dispersion of government offices has led to decreased inter-departmental coordination, inconsistent space allocation, and difficulties in providing high-quality public services to citizens.

To resolve long-standing complaints regarding administrative inefficiency and poor service, the city aims to construct a rational and future-oriented office building. This new facility will go beyond serving as a simple administrative space and will introduce a variety of functions that allow it to coexist with the citizens.

Project Overview

Competition Title: Architectural Design Competition for the Extension of the Yeosu City Hall Annex

Site Location: 1, Sicheong-ro, Yeosu-si (parking lot site south of the existing City Hall)

Site Area: 47,394㎡ (subject to urban planning revision)

Primary Use: Government Office Facility (Local Government Building)

Total Floor Area for Extension: 17,492.90㎡

Estimated Construction Cost: KRW 47,991,000,000 (electrical work not included; to be tendered separately)

Building Scale: 2 basement levels / 6 above-ground levels

Parking Capacity: Minimum of 160 underground spaces (750 total spaces or more)

Zoning and Districts: Natural Green Area, Type-2 General Residential Zone, Central Commercial Zone, Fire Protection District, Urban Landscape District

Estimated Design Fee: KRW 2,757,400,000 (including VAT; excludes electrical design, includes various certifications and insurance)

Design Period: 180 days from project commencement (including holidays and permit acquisition period)

Competition Website: archidesign.co.kr

Read the full post on Bustler

Registration Deadline: May 23, 2025; Submission Deadline: May 23, 2025
The UIA World Congress of Architects 2026 Barcelona (UIA2026BCN) announces the Call for Participants, an international and open invitation for professionals from around the world to take part in the largest global architecture event.

The theme Becoming. Architectures for a planet in transition will shape the Congress programme as a platform to explore innovative perspectives, interdisciplinary approaches and transformative ideas that address contemporary challenges.

Professionals from architecture, landscape architecture, urbanism, design, engineering, research, photography, film and art are invited to participate with projects, essays or multimedia pieces. Through this call, UIA2026BCN aims to bring together knowledge across research, practice and education to generate new perspectives and strengthening connections between disciplines.

The UIA World Congress of Architects, organised by the International Union of Architects has been held every three years since 1948. This edition, taking place in Barcelona in 2026 is organised by the Higher Council of Spanish Colleges of Architects Guilds (CSCAE), in collaboration with the Architects ́ Association of Catalonia (COAC) and the participation and financing of the Ministry of Housing and Urban Agenda, the Generalitat of Catalonia and the Barcelona City Council. By hosting the Congress, Barcelona also become the World Capital of Architecture 2026.

Becoming. Architectures for a planet in transition

Becoming explores spatial practices that foster processes of appropriation and transformation of the inhabited environment —both human and nonhuman, individual and collective— investigating the potential of time as a design tool. Far from the idea of tabula rasa, it is rooted in a deep awareness of preexisting physical and cultural landscapes.

Becoming promotes the transformation of the existing reality, addressing the relationship between the urgency of contemporary challenges and a long-term perspective that unfolds through six lines of research: Becoming More-than-human, Becoming Attuned, Becoming Embodied, Becoming Interdependent, Becoming Hyper-Conscious and Becoming Circular.

The proposals can be submitted in the following categories:

Critical Design – Architectural projects, industrial design, prototypes and explorations in design methodologies.

Critical Essay – Essays, academic papers and research articles.

Critical Image – Photographs, films and multimedia pieces.

Process

The UIA2026BCN Scientific Committee and the Evaluation Committee, will evaluate the proposals from broad and cross-disciplinary perspectives. After an initial pre-selection by subject matter experts, a jury composed of internationally renowned professionals— specialised in each category–, as well as the Congress curatorial team, will make the final selection.

Accepted proposals will be part of the central events of the UIA2026BCN Congress between 28 June and 2 July 2026. The jury will determine the form of participation, which may include individual presentations, debates or other planned formats. Additionally, it will decide whether the selected works will be exhibited physically or digitally at the Congress exhibition and whether they will be published in the official catalogue.

Registration Deadline: Jul 1, 2025; Submission Deadline: Jul 1, 2025
Nomadic Artist Residency Spaces

Premise

Registration must be completed at: seekfanatic.com/go/nomadicspaces

The Nomadic Artist Residency Spaces competition invites architects, designers, and visionaries to develop innovative and impactful mobile artist residencies. Art has the power to transform communities, and this competition seeks to create self-sufficient, transportable living and working spaces that allow artists to engage deeply with diverse environments and underserved communities.

Participants are challenged to design mobile units that provide not only comfortable accommodations and functional studio spaces but also opportunities for meaningful interaction with local cultures and landscapes. The aim is to foster a dynamic exchange between artists and communities, enriching both through creative expression. Sustainability, adaptability, and logistical feasibility are key aspects to consider in developing these moving sanctuaries for artistic creation.

Objective

The competition seeks designs for a versatile, mobile artist residency that can adapt to different landscapes and cultural contexts. The proposal must integrate essential facilities, including:

Living Quarters: Comfortable yet compact sleeping and personal spaces.

Studio Space: A functional workspace catering to various artistic disciplines.

Community Engagement Areas: Optional shared or interactive spaces for workshops, exhibitions, or collaborations.

Key Design Considerations:

Transportability: The structure must be easily mobile, considering existing transportation infrastructure such as trailers, modular units, or collapsible structures.

Deployment & Assembly: The unit should be quickly and efficiently set up and packed when relocating.

Adaptability: The design must be able to operate in different terrains and climates, including urban peripheries, remote landscapes, coastal areas, and deserts.

Sustainability: Utilize eco-friendly materials and off-grid solutions (solar panels, rainwater harvesting, composting toilets, etc.).

Minimal Environmental Impact: The structure should be lightweight, reusable, and non-invasive to its surroundings.

Cultural Sensitivity: The design should reflect an understanding of and respect for local traditions and cultural contexts wherever it is placed.

Site

This competition encourages participants to design a nomadic residency, meaning no fixed site is provided. Instead, participants must consider a range of environments where such a residency could be deployed. These may include:

Rural landscapes – forests, mountains, or remote plains.

Coastal regions – small fishing villages, beachfronts, or wetlands.

Urban peripheries – underutilized spaces on the edges of cities.

Deserts and arid regions – requiring innovative cooling and shading solutions.

Site Guidelines:

Space Allocation: The deployment space should range between 500 - 2000 square meters, allowing for both residency functions and community interactions.

Environmental Conditions: Participants should address factors such as temperature variations, access to water, and natural hazards.

Community Interaction: The design should facilitate engagement with local people, potentially including exhibition spaces, workshops, or temporary installations.

Constraints & Restrictions

Mobility & Transport

The design must be transportable and should consider practical means such as trailers, modified vehicles, modular container units, or prefabricated structures.

The unit should be lightweight yet durable to withstand frequent movement.

Consider collapsible or expandable features for ease of transport.

Resource Management

Water & Energy: Off-grid solutions such as solar energy, wind power, rainwater collection, and composting systems should be incorporated.

Waste Management: The design must promote low waste production, sustainable disposal, and potentially a zero-waste lifestyle.

Material Selection: Use of recycled, biodegradable, or locally sourced materials is encouraged.

Budget & Feasibility

The design must balance cost-effectiveness with functionality, ensuring that it is financially viable for actual implementation.

Maintenance & Longevity: Consider ease of repairs, durability of materials, and long-term operational feasibility.

Cultural & Social Considerations

The space should be inclusive and welcoming to diverse artistic practices and backgrounds.

Community collaboration should be encouraged—whether through architecture, programming, or open-access features.

Competition Timeline & Fees

Milestone

Date & Time (GMT/UTC)

Fee

Early Registration

$29 USD

Final Registration &

Registration Deadline: Jun 12, 2025; Submission Deadline: Jun 20, 2025
As the world is continuously transforming and expanding, the amount of data and information created every day is also increasing constantly. Human intellect today is expected to evolve at the same rate as our world to continue our journey into the future. Despite all the information, reading and self-learning remain the most powerful tools available to mankind to consume knowledge. Learning bolsters awareness, exposure and productivity, which in turn results into development.

Despite its importance, education is still inaccessible to many communities in remote locations around the world. Self-learning, especially through reading, is crucial for the society’s development. It is necessary to have places promoting education and self-learning to educate the local population within the closest proximity. It will make them accessible to gainful employment opportunities in their home towns and will thereby avoid the need for migration elsewhere.

“Education is the most powerful weapon which you can use to change the world.” -Nelson Mandela (Political Leader, Philanthropist and former President of South Africa)

OPPORTUNITY:

Books are considered to be the torchbearers for knowledge, helping mankind develop its intellect and create a world that is constantly developing. With an aim to make education more accessible, we have transformed books to digital, audio and visual formats.

Despite all these efforts, books in any format are still inaccessible to various communities across our planet. It is now utterly important to focus on this lack of accessibility and prioritize towards creating a source of knowledge to isolated communities.

Libraries as an educational incubator is a space that not only sheds light on conventional means of knowledge but also encourages its users to interact, share ideas and grow together. Rather than accepting urban migration as a given, a library can be designed with an aim to restore dignity and induce development.

Can we rethink a library of the 21st-century public space where knowledge is not limited to books? Can we ignite the new age movement of learning?

“A room without books is like a body without a soul.” - Marcus Tullius Cicero (Roman statesman and philosopher)

CHALLENGE:

Participants are to design a Tiny Library optimized for 50 users with engaging multifunctional spaces for all ages and spatial experience. The Tiny Library would be equipped with traditional reading material along with modern formats like e-books, audiobooks, audio-visual books etc.

The space would be designed as a centralized think tank for the local communities with a focus on activities and functions of public interactions and community development.

Participants should consider affordability and optimum use of space while designing. The designed space should be augmented to hold a maximum number of books in a limited space. The structure should not exceed 300 sq.mt. of built-up area.

The proposed design should also be easy to maintain. The proposal should be iconic, inviting, and creating a statement of its own on the chosen site. The proposed design should have contact between humans and nature.

The proposed designs can be visualized as mobile or stationary. One could also develop the given space as a flexible module that can be replicated so as to adapt to different site conditions, making it versatile in nature. Participants will be required to provide a justification for their design choices.

The designed spaces should be innovative, encourage self-learning as well as strengthen the communal spirit. Energy saving and sustainability should be given a thought. We encourage the participants to develop their programs. The space designed should not be limited to the standard activities viz. reading and self-learning space, sanitation space, administration, reception or information desk. The design should provoke innovative activities that stimulate and accelerate learning.

SITE SELECTION:

Rural populations across the globe face a mass exodus of its young population owing to the lack of education, health care, employment opportunities among many others.

Participants are to choose a site in a rural or remote context for the proposal, wherever they feel accessibility to knowledge may change the existing circumstance. The design should be well integrated into the context.

The site selected should be in a dire need of connecting to education and learning. The site should justify the participant’s design.

AWARDS:
