As the need for sustainable alternatives to building anew becomes increasingly urgent, the AR New into Old awards celebrate architectural adaptations and remodelings that welcome new contemporary uses to older buildings. 

These awards speak of what we inherit and preserve, why we assemble and transform, and how the spaces we appropriate can be reimagined to suggest that the world could be different. 

 Launched in 2017, the awards recognise imaginative appropriations of structures, from innovative insertions to ambitious adaptations, that offer buildings a new lease of life.

Past winners include SO-IL and Freaks Architecture’s adaptation of a former glass factory into a cultural centre in France (2023) and ZAV Architects’ conversion of a 1930s house into a film studio in Iran (2021).

Entries for 2025’s awards close on Friday 7 March 2025.

It may not be your first instinct when entering a building to consider how it makes you feel, but architecture has always had a big impact on emotions. Different spaces are designed to make its inhabitants feel different things; offices can make you feel energised and productive, art galleries can make you feel thoughtful and curious, and museums can make you feel calm and intrigued. Each of these spaces are completely different from each other and are far more than just a building.

As part of a series of annual architecture competitions, the Museum of Emotions competition is tasking participants with using architecture as a tool to bring out different emotions. They are being asked to design a museum that includes two separate halls that bring out contrasting emotions – one inducing negative emotions, and the other inducing positive emotions.

Participants are free to choose the specific emotions they incite with their designs – fear, anger, anxiety, love, happiness, laughter, etc. The purpose of the Museum of Emotions is to use architecture as the primary tool to create emotional states, through consideration of the scales of the spaces, the journey through the space, colour, lighting, and material choice.

As this is an ideas competition, participants are free to choose any site location, real or imaginary, as well as the size of their structure.

Museum of Emotions / Edition 6 is one of the Buildners’ silent competitions, in which participants must communicate their ideas without the use of any text. The design concept and thinking behind it must all be communicated solely through the use of visuals. 

PRIZES

3 winning proposals, 1 special award recipients and 6 honourable mentions will be selected. Buildner will award a total of 10,000 € in prize money to competition winners as follows:

1st Prize – 5,000 €
2nd Prize – 3,000 €
3rd Prize – 1,000 €

+ 6 honourable mentions

Buildner Student Award – 1,000 €

The Temple Hoyne Buell Center for the Study of American Architecture invites submissions for its biennial Dissertation Colloquium, to be held March 28-29, 2025. Doctoral students from diverse institutional and disciplinary backgrounds, working on dissertation topics related to architecture and the built environment in the Americas, are invited to apply. The plural, Americas, is meant to expand the Center’s mission in two ways: first, to include comparative thought about building practices across the hemisphere and the world; and second, to suggest that there are several Americas within the United States. Students whose dissertations focus on other geographies will be equally considered if comparative perspectives with hemispheric contexts are made explicit. Cross-disciplinary approaches are especially encouraged.

Up to eight doctoral students from universities worldwide will be selected to present a 20-minute talk drawn from their doctoral research. The presentation should be based on a self-contained chapter or portion of the student’s dissertation research and should not be an overview or synthesis of the dissertation as a whole.

Requirements
Students must be enrolled in an accredited doctoral program and have completed their coursework plus at least one year of dissertation research. Submissions must include a complete draft of the intended presentation, together with illustrations. Submissions must also be accompanied by the following: a cover sheet specifying the student’s institutional affiliation, postal and e-mail addresses, and phone number; a 150-word abstract describing the paper’s relationship to the overall dissertation topic; and a brief statement from the student’s principal adviser certifying the applicant’s status (stage of completion) in the doctoral program.

The call for submissions for a new edition of the Richard H. Driehaus Architecture Competition, organized by the Traditional Building Cultures Foundation thanks to Richard H. Driehaus and the collaboration of the Spanish Ministry of Culture through its Directorate General for Cultural Heritage and Fine Arts, INTBAU Spain, and the Spanish High Council of Institutes of Architects, is now open.

Proposals for each of the three municipalities selected in the first phase of the competition—Baltanás (Palencia), Irurita (Navarra), and La Fresneda (Teruel)—can be submitted until February 4, 2025.

In this second phase of the competition, which is international in scope, architects of any nationality are encouraged to submit architectural and urban design proposals for any of these three locations.

For each of the three sites, the authors of the winning First Prize proposal will receive a total of €12,000, and the authors of each Honorable Mention awarded by the jury will receive a total of €2,000.
