The Prem Jain Memorial Trust National Green Earth Challenge invites students of Engineering, Architecture, and Design colleges across India to tackle critical environmental challenges by developing innovative and sustainable design solutions for the built environment. With the mounting pressures of climate change, resource depletion, and urbanization, this challenge emphasizes the importance of a transdisciplinary, integrated approach. Participants will blend insights from various disciplines to create solutions that are not only eco-friendly but also socially inclusive.
The PJMT National Green Earth Challenge this year will focus on two distinct themes: 

• The Arch-Eng Challenge: The Arch-Eng theme encourages Architecture and Engineering students to create sustainable design solutions that are rooted in evidence and address issues related to the environment & people. The challenge emphasizes a transdisciplinary approach, integrating the environmental, social, and technological aspects while designing the solution. Participants should bring their innovative ideas and subject matter expertise to reinvent conventional practices or provide an alternate solution to enhance efficiency. 
• The Design Challenge: The Design category of the PJMT National Green Earth Challenge aims to promote sustainability by transforming available materials into innovative products that benefit humanity, communities, society, and the environment as a whole. Our planet faces escalating environmental challenges, from resource scarcity to mounting waste and pollution. Designers have a unique ability to shape how products are created, used, and discarded. In this challenge, we ask you to reimagine design processes through the lens of circularity—creating innovative solutions that keep materials in use for as long as possible, minimize waste, and regenerate natural systems. 

Who can participate? 

• The challenge is open to undergraduate students currently enrolled in architecture, engineering, or design programs. 
• You can participate individually or form teams of 2 or 3 members. Teams can consist of students from different batches or colleges, as long as all members meet the eligibility criteria. 
• Eligibility is restricted to Indian citizens. 

Stages of Evaluation 

• First Stage: A panel of experts in the field will review all applications and rank the top solutions from four zones – North, East, South, and West. 
• Second Stage: The top solutions will present their submissions online to a distinguished jury in each zone. Per zone, three prizes will be awarded at this stage: zonal winner, zonal first runner-up, and zonal second runner-up. 
• Third Stage: The zonal winners and first runners-up advance to the third stage, competing in Delhi for the National Prize. They will present their solutions while incorporating feedback from previous stages. A national winner and national runner-up will be announced at this stage. 

Awards:

  • Winner: ₹1,50,000 
  • Runner-Up: ₹50,000 
• Zonal Rounds:   
  • Winner: ₹25,000  
  • First Runner-Up: ₹18,000  
  • Second Runner-Up: ₹12,000

• 13th November 2024 – Applications Open 
• 6th January 2025 – Applications Close 
• 1st-2nd March 2025 – Zonal Rounds: Top entries from the North, East, South, and West zone will present their ideas to judges. 
• 28th-29th March 2025 – National Round: Zonal winners and first runners-up will compete at the Grand Finale in Delhi.

The annual Tactical Urbanism NOW! competition is set to encourage creative and forward-thinking designers to propose new original spaces fostering long-term and sustainable changes. For its 5^th edition, the competition invites participants to embrace a “hyperlocal yet scalable” mindset.

The challenges of the 21st century demand new models of urban living, driven by evolving environmental concerns, shifting social dynamics and technological innovation. In recent years, cities have become laboratories for bold experimentation, rethinking how public spaces can respond to the complexities of contemporary life.

Tactical Urbanism NOW! calls on architects, planners, designers and creatives from all disciplines to propose projects that redefine the role of public spaces in a dynamic and interconnected world.

GUIDELINES

The competition seeks projects that not only solve functional issues but also spark community engagement, resilience, and sustainability. Whether transforming an empty lot into a dynamic neighborhood gathering spot or reinventing an underpass as a thriving public space, the goal is to demonstrate how small, thoughtful changes can leave a lasting impact on the urban fabric. 

As always, this competition allows participants to choose any location worldwide for their intervention. The key lies in demonstrating how your chosen site can become a catalyst for transformation. The idea is to discover opportunities in areas that might otherwise be overlooked, leveraging simple, tactical changes to breathe new life into them.

While the possibilities are endless, contestants are asked to explain the reasoning behind their concept. These small-scale projects, like acupuncture points, channel energy into the urban fabric, igniting systemic improvements that resonate far beyond their immediate footprint.

As the need for sustainable alternatives to building anew becomes increasingly urgent, the AR New into Old awards celebrate architectural adaptations and remodelings that welcome new contemporary uses to older buildings. 

These awards speak of what we inherit and preserve, why we assemble and transform, and how the spaces we appropriate can be reimagined to suggest that the world could be different. 

 Launched in 2017, the awards recognise imaginative appropriations of structures, from innovative insertions to ambitious adaptations, that offer buildings a new lease of life.

Past winners include SO-IL and Freaks Architecture’s adaptation of a former glass factory into a cultural centre in France (2023) and ZAV Architects’ conversion of a 1930s house into a film studio in Iran (2021).

The Ceramics of Italy Tile Competition is officially accepting submissions for its 2025 North American edition! Organized by Confindustria Ceramica (the Italian Association of Ceramics) and the Italian Trade Agency, this prestigious, long-running awards program recognizes the exceptional work of North American architects, designers and students who feature Italian ceramic tiles from Ceramics of Italy member brands in their projects. 

Categories: Residential – Non-Residential – Urban Design – Design & New Applications – Students

Prize: Winners in the built-project categories will receive cash prizes up to $5,000 plus a CEU-accredited trip to Bologna, Italy to attend Cersaie 2025: the world’s largest exhibition of ceramic tile and bathroom furnishings, alongside a delegation of top design media.

All category winners will also receive a trip to Coverings 2025 in Orlando, FL  – the largest international tile and stone exhibition in North America – from April 29 – May 2, where they will attend a dedicated awards ceremony and present their projects in front of a large audience of design and trade media, manufacturers, and tile industry professionals.

Deadline: February 14, 2025. 

Cost: There is no fee to submit and multiple entries are welcome.

Eligibility: Open to new build, building renovation and architectural renovation projects carried out worldwide by a North American architect, interior designer or other design professional and completed between January 1, 2020 and September 30, 2024. 

Students submitting imaginative spaces in the form of renderings, floor plans and/or sketches can work in teams or individually. Students must be enrolled at an accredited university in North America to be eligible.

Students Reinventing Cities is C40 Cities‘ global competition seeking innovative, tangible designs that help build a green and just urban future. The fourth Students Reinventing Cities competition launched in October 2024 and will run until July 2025. 

The competition creates a space to:

• drive collaboration between youth and city governments to accelerate low-carbon urban redevelopment.

• support the development of globally replicable and innovative urban design solutions.

• strengthen knowledge and understanding of leading climate policies, solutions and technologies. 

HOW IT WORKS

• Participating world-leading citiesselect urban areas urgently seeking redevelopment. These sites are open to students and young people across the world to redevelop, presenting creative and innovative solutions that address city climate targets, resident priorities and local challenges.

• Interested participants select a site/city to develop a proposal for. Participants then form teams and develop a comprehensive action plan for the site.

• Projects should seek to transform urban areas into green and thriving neighbourhoods, integrating the “15-Minute City” model & proximity approach for low-carbon urbanisation.

PARTICIPATION ELIGIBILITY 

• Current university students of any age, any degree level, and any discipline can participate, provided they are enrolled in the 2024-2025 (or 2025) academic year.

• Any young person who is not a current student can also participate, provided they are aged 18-28.

• Teams must comprise at least one current university student. “University(ies)” refers to research institutions, schools, colleges and the entire academic community in higher education, above the high school level.

• Teams must be composed of at least two people. There is no limit to the maximum number of people that can be in a team.

• The competition encourages participants to develop mixed-discipline teams, drawing on knowledge from a wide range of studies. Teams may include participants from multiple departments such as architecture, urbanism, environment, engineering, real estate development, sociology, economy, and the arts, among other fields.

•  Any eligible participant is welcome to apply, regardless of their city of residence. Participants do not need to be from or reside in, the city they have chosen for the competition.

• 29 May 2025*| Deadline to submit your project* 

• June 2025 | Juries comprised of C40 and city experts will assess all projects

PARTICIPATING CITIES & SITES TO CHOOSE FROM 

• The fourth Students Reinventing Cities competition has launched in 11 cities worldwide –  Amman, Barcelona, Freetown, Istanbul, Jakarta, Johannesburg, Lisbon, Milan-Segrate, Quito, Rome and Tshwane. Please consult the Sites in Competitionfor information about the selected sites and development expectations. 
• For each city in competition, a Site Form is provided. The city prepares this document to present the site and detail the objectives of the project. The Site Form may provide further information regarding submission requirements such as language requirements as well as potential additional awards given by the city.
•  An online folder (“Dataroom”) will also be available containing more relevant documentation [maps, images, regulations] related to the site. 

SCORING CRITERIA
For each site, all submitted projects will be judged based on the following criteria:

• Quality of the team and their approach to developing the project.
• Quality of design and relevance of the project 
• Proposed solutions aligned with the Green & Thriving Neighbourhoods Guidance
• Feasibility of the project.

For each site, the final projects are evaluated (anonymously) by a jury composed of representatives from the city, C40 and external experts. The composition of the juries will be made public. 

One winner will be chosen per city/site; some projects may be awarded a special mention. Please refer to the Competition Regulations for a more detailed breakdown of the scoring criteria.

WINNING PRIZES 

For each city/site, the winning team will receive:

• An official Certificate signed by the Mayor of the city and the Executive Director of C40.
• Coverage in local and global communication campaigns (social media, press releases, Reinventing Cities website).
